EuropeOld Town of Kerkira, Corfu, Greece

HCWT 07.19.2013 15:27 0 0

Enjoy a stroll through the old town of Kerkira in Corfu, Greece

Take in a popular Mediterranean pastime... an evening stroll through the Old town of Kerkira, on the Island of Corfu, Greece. Starting at dusk when the swallows fill the sky, all ages take to the tree-lined walkway stretching along Venetian colonnades and arches. Evenings cool the town, fill the restaurants and bring children’s laughter to the streets as kids typically stay up late.  Perched high above the Adriatic Sea near Krini are the ruins of the Byzantine fortress, Angelokastro. Even greater views can be seen from the Byzantine Monastery of Palaiokastritsa that overlooks rocky bays filled with blue-green waters. Other favorite family outings are building sand castles at Arilas beach with its great sand and pedal-boating about the waters off Agios Georgios Beach.

United States & CanadaFather & Daughter discover Canada's Gatineau Park

HCWT 07.22.2012 20:18 0 0

Only a few minutes drive from the heart of the capital of Canada was the Gatineau Park, a forest, which encompasses some 361 sq km /140

Pink Lake is one of the Park's favorite sights. Find out why it's called Pink Lake.

sq mi. The Park was founded by Mackenzie King, Canada’s longest reigning Prime Minister.

In 1903 Mackenzie King fell in love and bought a small piece of land edging Kingsmere Lake. In the ensuing years, he purchased more land in the area and finally came to own 231 ha (570 ac). To the south of the lake he built a simple four-room summer cottage, which he called Kingswood.  Later, he moved to another cottage, Moorside, which he made into an elegant year-round residence with elaborate flowerbeds and a collections of art. When he died, he bequeathed his property to the Canadians as Gatineau Park.

The Park encompasses 35,600 ha (88,000 acres) of forest and 40 crystal-clear lakes. The forests contain 1,000 species of plants and 40 species of trees - 90% of which are maple. It is home to 230 species of birds and 54 species of mammals - from bats and deer to bears and wolverines.  Across its wooded hills are 185 km (115 mi) of hiking and biking trails and 15 picnic sites. The Park offers cross-country and downhill skiing facilities, snowshoeing trails, beaches and campgrounds.

Today, this protected nature reserve provides some 1.5 million annual visitors with year-round serenity of its natural environment and a multitude of outdoor activities.

Leila and I were excited to see the popular Pink Lake.  As we looked down at the turquoise waters, we commented, “But it’s not pink!”  Our guide smiled, “It was named after the ‘Pinks’, an Irish family who first settled here.”

After a fine lunch at the Moorside Tearoom, part of the Mackenzie King Estate we toured the former Prime Minister’s estate, spending sometime at the Kingswood Residence, which had much of Mackenzie King’s personal belongings on exhibit.  Our guide commented, “He was frugal and some say eccentric, but he was a great Prime Minister.”

Cozumel Island Adventure – Family Island Getaway
Horseback Vacation in Cozumel

We are riding on horseback through the jungles surrounding El Cedral, a small village, which boasts an ancient Mayan shrine dating back to 900 AD. We find several places to buy homemade blankets, at $3 each, and a man selling soda pop out of a cooler. We spot an iguana perched high in a wild mango tree and we see numerous underground caves where the Mayan Indians used to live.

My children and I have opted to view Cozumel by horseback but we know it’s an island off the Yucatan Peninsula best known for its underwater diving. The quaint town of San Miguel attracts 50 percent of the country’s cruise passengers, making it the third largest destination

ance, catch a glimpse of the blue Caribbean Sea. Seagulls and herons fly overhead and brightly colored birds sit in the trees lining the beach.  Along the shoreline, hundreds of bumblebee jellyfish, so called because they are the color and size of bees, clog the waters. Our horses seem unconcerned about the jellyfish as they splash along the water’s edge.
