Spring Celebrations

St. Patrick’s Day  March 17th, is in honor of Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.  Enjoy wearing green and take in the many celebrations and parades.

Vernal Equinox  March 20th, the day when night and day are of equal length.  First day of spring.

Easter  March/April date varies, Christian holiday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The festival has its roots in the Jewish Passover.

Passover  March/April date varies, one of the most important Jewish festivals.  Celebrated for one week and commemorates the Exodus or freeing of Israel from Egyptian slavery.

Daylight Savings Time  2nd Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour to provide more daylight time during waking hours.  Suggested by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, enacted in 1966.  Arizona and Hawaii don’t observe DST.  

April Fools Day  April 1st, observed by playing practical jokes on family and friends.

Flower Festival  April 8th, this Buddhist holiday celebrates Buddha’s birthday.

Earth Day  April 22nd, urges commitment to ecological issues and conservation.

Cinco De Mayo  May 5th, a major Mexican victory against the occupying French.  Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for May 5th.

Mother’s Day  
2nd Sunday in May, a day to honor and be kind to mothers. Created in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson.

Memorial Day  Last monday in May, observed since the Civil War.  This day honors U.S. military who died in U.S. wars.
