Surprise visit to Virginia Beach

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Kids’ Korner,

My family's recent East coast camping adventure from Niagra Falls, NY to Norfolk, VA. culminated in a 2-day surprise visit to Virginia Beach.  My parents probably needed a break after educating my brother and me on the history of the East Coast!  From the balcony of our hotel we watched dolphins swimming not more than 150' feet off the shore--they swam by in the morning and also in the evening!  It was such fun to watch them  jumping in and out of the water.  My brother, Antonio and I shared the binoculars and discussed the merits of dolphins; he is 6 and he tried to scare me into believing the dolphins were sharks!  I intend to be a marine biologist and have studied dorsal fins far more than he has.  Mom and dad agreed that they were dolphins!
Mom and dad also loved riding our boogie boards.  This is a small surf board that you lie across with your upper body and ride the waves.  Mom was hilarious and very good on the boogie board--we couldn’t believe it!  I started to get the hang of grabbing the wave right at the curl, about the day we left.  Antonio looked so cool with all his gear... sunglasses, water wings, and colored nose sunscreen.
I learned much about American history on our trip but the visit to Virginia Beach spurred me on to learn more about the oceans and how to protect them.
