Tips, Tricks, & Tactics

•  Kids love to be involved in preparing for a trip. At first give suggestions about type and quantity of clothes needed, for example: 5 days of undershorts, 2 jeans, 2 shorts, bathing suit;  then let them go for the closet.  Edit as needed! Next, have them pack a back pack of favorite toys, books, games and such.  Before you know it, they’ll be packed and ready to go before you are!

•  Including a variety of drawing colors and paper on any trip is a sure winner. It can give hours of picture making for all ages. Also you can play tic-tac-toe, hangman, and begin a travel journal.

•  The best way to understand your child is to put yourself in his or her place. Things we take for granted are their first experiences, the world is seen different from 3 ft high; take time with your child’s discoveries--life’s smaller wonders.

•  Keep memories alive by reliving those great family adventures with... a camera! The kids can point out great shots and then stand in for credit.  When older, give them their own camera and film--this builds awareness, observation, and identifies what’s meaningful.

•  Attention all Nintendo, Sega, and CD users... How many times did the batteries go dead  mid-flight or mid-vacation? It’s a conspiracy... kid’s electronic gear are designed to drain batteries at the least opportune time! Solution:  Always bring extra batteries!

•  Car travel...with any age--bring a soccer ball, frisbee, basketball, baseball and such.  Find fields, parks, and courts along the way--a great way to stretch the limbs and exert some cooped up energy!
