Tips, Tricks, & Tactics

• When packing for air travel, it’s best to pack only what you can carry, usually one carry-on-size bag per person.  Be sure to cut off old destination tags, label your bag inside and out with your address and phone number, and place colorful tape or an obvious mark on the outside for easier identification in the claim area. And while in the airport, keep your luggage with you at all times.  Vandals or security will seize all abandoned luggage.

• A few weeks prior to setting off on your family vacation, join the kids in a trek to your local library--read about and look at pictures and maps of the area you’re visiting.  Research the history, popular attractions, and favorite spots of the local people--these out-of-the-way places usually offer color to any adventure.  Locate on a map your route and discuss this with the kids.  Encourage them to ask questions. All this adds to the excitement and anticipation of your trip, while giving a sense of familiarity.

• Have you grabbed the camera to shoot that truly memorable or adorable shot, only to find the battery is dead?  And of course you’re miles from nowhere!  Solution:  always carry a spare camera battery as well as several extra rolls of film.  And when traveling by plane, try to pack all camera and video gear along with film in a separate bag.  This way you can have it physically searched instead of sending it through the airport security scanners, which are, of late, stronger and will most likely ruin film along with memories of your vacation!
