Safety Watch

E-mail Print PDF

BE INFORMED... Check out http:// for the latest U.S. Department of State travel warnings for the country you plan to visit. For information on immunizations and health precautions for a specific country, check out Include the embassy addresses and phone numbers in your travel documents.

BE PREPARED... Purchase travel and medical insurance. Leave photocopies of travel documents (tickets, passports, insurance, traveler’s check numbers and credit cards) at home with someone and in your belongings, separate from original documents.

BE PATIENT... Airport security needs your help and cooperation. Go early, at least 2 hours for domestic travel and 3 hours for international travel. Do not carry anything sharp on your person, in your carry-on luggage or handbag; be ready to fire up cell phones and laptops; carry-on drinks will be inspected for volatile liquids.

BE READY... Lock and indiscreetly label luggage. Keep an eye on your luggage at all times. Do not call attention to yourself with flashy clothes, overdone jewelry, or loud behavior. Carry your camera in a plain, non-descript bag. Use a money belt for money and documents. Travel in small groups and to sites less visited by hordes of tourists.

BE INTUITIVE... Use common sense and listen to your intuition. Avoid situations that pose a risk and make you and family members unnecessarily vulnerable.

Camping the Great Outdoors
...ideas to consider

"Since that first camping trip, all of our trips have been only partially planned, with itineraries set more as ideas than as fixed schedules.  We usually take each day one at a time, and do whatever feels right for that particular day.  Slowing down to smell the roses has never been so sweet as when we travel with our two kids!"  -- David, Westminster, MD

Take it from David, there's a time to plan and a time to take one day at a time.
