Camping Tips

Camping the great outdoors

• Plan ahead and keep it simple!

• A tent in the backyard is a fun way to prepare kids for camping.

• Consider having a separate tent for the older kids.

• Pick a camping spot that offers activities for the whole family. Is the site suitable for supervising the little ones?

• Pack light--bring just enough clothing for all kinds of weather.  Include comfy shoes and day packs for hiking.

• Plan simple meals, pack foods that don’t need ice, and prepare as much as possible ahead of time.

• Give each kid a large duffel bag to pack sleeping bags, mat, pillow, clothes, toys, and flashlight.

• Pack supplies in plastic storage containers with lids, the large ones can double for chairs.

• Pack a well stocked first aid kit including handy wipes, mosquito repellent, Caladryl lotion, and sun screen. Show the kids what poison ivy, oak, sumac and stinging nettles look like.

• Share the experience, have your kids pitch in with camp set up, cooking, and all clean-up chores.

• Short lawn chairs are ideal for adults to toddlers; a circular barbeque grate comes in handy for the fire pit; bungee cords and duct tape can be life savers; citronella candles can help with pesky insects.

•  Have your kids carry a whistle; if they should wander off, it’s more effective than shouting.

• Hang lanterns up away from younger children; always monitor kids around the campfire.

• Follow rules of the park; dispose trash in appropriate receptacles; treat mother nature with respect; call ahead--does the park sell firewood or do you need to bring your own; learn about and practice fire safety.
