Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Tsunamis -- Oh My!

Mother Nature has never been more active than on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Earthquakes are frequent on the Big Island of Hawaii, but more so recently and with higher magnitudes. Swarms of earthquakes accompanied the March 5, 2011 collapse of the Puu 'O 'o crater and the eruption of lava from the March 6, 2011 fissure, spattering molten lava up to 80 feet high along Kilauea's east rift zone.

At the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, you can find out more about the earthquakes at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ and Kilauea's recent activity at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/. Check out the volcano webcams at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/

On March 10, 2011 a devastating 9.0 earthquake hit Japan setting off a tsunami racing across the Pacific. Waves up to 6 feet high surged onto the coastal areas of Hawaii causing widespread damage. Find more information about the March 11, 2011 Honshu Tsunami at NOAA Center for Tsunami Research .
