Operation... EarthWatch
Here’s your chance to make a difference.  Work in the field side by side with scientists from around the world researching an ever changing world: help collect information to save species and their habitats; dig into the past, to better understand earth and its people; learn ways to ensure the future of the planet.  You’ll go places few people go and get to do things few people do.
At the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute at Central Washington University, you’ll learn to care for Washoe, Moja, Tatu, and Dar, chimpanzees that have learned American Sign Language. Observe how their new spacious and stimulating home affects behavior and what provides the best mix with each season.  This research is critical for legislation in the welfare of chimps in captivity.  You’ll stay in dorm rooms just a 10 minute walk from the institute.
Track lemon sharks off Bimini in the Bahamas; observe the behavior of wild horses on Assateague Island, Maryland; locate Mojave desert tortoise in California’s Joshua Tree National Park; explore the importance of a mountain with an Aboriginal tribe of Australia; discover how caterpillars from Costa Rica defend themselves against parasites; document traditional log houses of Finland; dig for Columbian mammoth in South Dakota; help build and use solar ovens in Indonesia; and learn how to safeguard Florida’s manatees.  These are just a few of the fascinating studies going on around the world--your help is needed!
Accommodations and food range from basic to very pleasant depending on project and location.  The tasks also vary--you’ll be taught everything you need to know to participate.
Shared costs include food, housing, transportation, as well as some expedition costs. Range is from $650-$3695. Most are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.  Minimum age is 16; younger children will be considered.

Earthwatch matches people from all walks of life with scientific and conservation projects worldwide.  These expeditions, led by scholars from universities, museums, and research centers around the world are in need of both funding and
volunteer assistance.  As a private sponsor of scientific field research, Earthwatch has, for the past 25 years, coordinated 2,083 projects in 118 countries.
