Travelin' Grandma
on the road with Myrna Oakley

I’m picking up the grandkids and heading to Southern Oregon for some winter fun!  Here’s our itinerary: Diamond Lake Resort, near Crater Lake, for cross-country skiing, inner tubing, and, hopefully, a snowmobilePopular with all is the tubing hill with an up-hill tow.1 ride from Diamond Lake to Crater Lake – weather permitting!  We’ll check in with the Diamond Lake Resort Cross Country Ski Center ahead of the trip, and when we arrive too.
We’re renting one of the cottages at the resort that look out on t
Dog sledding is an adventure the family will never forget. 2he lake and on both Mt. Thielsen and Mt. Bailey; we’ll ask for one of the cabins that has a kitchenette so we can make hot chocolate and popcorn in the evenings, around the cozy fire!
    If the road
is open we’ll drive up to see Crater Lake and Crater Lake Lodge, at the 6,000-ft. elevation level. The lodge closes during the winter but cross country skiers and snowmobilers traverse the area, weather permitting. Also, we’ll drive north on Highway 97 to Chemult to check out the Chemult Sled Dog Races, scheduled for January 15th and 16th of 2011. This free event offers short sprint and long distant sled dog races and also advanced and novice skijoring races.  The dogs will be a big hit with the kids, maybe even the highlight of our trip.

Camping the Great Outdoors
...ideas to consider

"Since that first camping trip, all of our trips have been only partially planned, with itineraries set more as ideas than as fixed schedules.  We usually take each day one at a time, and do whatever feels right for that particular day.  Slowing down to smell the roses has never been so sweet as when we travel with our two kids!"  -- David, Westminster, MD

Take it from David, there's a time to plan and a time to take one day at a time.
