Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Porter, Indiana 
           
    Along Lake Michigan is an ideal ecological study area with miles
of beaches, sand dunes, bog, wetlands, prairie, and woodlands. It’s home to some 300 species of birds, 200 varieties of wildflowers, and rated 7th among national parks in native plant diversity.  Bailly Homestead, settled in 1820, and Chellberg Farm, in 1874, depict samples of Indiana history.
    Activities:  Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding, hang gliding, dune climbing, wildlife watching, wild flowers, picnicking, programs and exhibits.  Visitor Centers.  No entrance fee.
    Camping:  One large developed  campground.

Padre Island National Seashore Corpus Christi, Texas
 
    In the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Texas is a vanishing barrier island--133,000 acres of white sand beaches with warm waters, picturesque dunes, lush grasslands, rich tidal waters and an abundance of wildlife.  The park has 80 miles of beach and is a popular playground for a multitude of beach and water activities.    
    Activities:  Beach driving, fishing, swimming, wind surfing, sailing, boating, surfing, bird and wild-life watching, hiking, shelling, water skiing.  Visitor Center.  Entrance fee.  
    Camping:  One semi-primitive, one primitive and 7.5 miles of open beach for primitive camping.

Arcadia National Park Bar Harbor, Maine
    Some 40,000 acres of Atlantic coast shoreline, hardwood and fir forests, mountains, lakes and offshore islands are preserved here.  Enjoy 120 miles of trails and 44 miles of carriage roads for walking and biking.
    Activities:  Scenic drives, hiking, backpacking, biking, horse riding, shore exploration, picnicking, fishing, wildlife watching, cross-country skiing, ranger-led activities. Visitor Center. Entrance fee.
    Camping:  Two developed campgrounds.

Curecanti National Recreation Area Gunnison, Colorado
    Blue Mesa, Morrow Point and Crystal Lakes, created by 3 different dams on the Gunnison river, provide spectacular scenery--ma-jestic mesa, deep clear blue waters and steep towering canyon walls.  Along with endless recreation possibilities, visit the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the U.S., roam a 5,000 acre archeological site, and see the narrow gauge train exhibit and remnants of ancient native dwellings.      
    Activities: Hiking, picnicking, wildlife watching, boating, salmon and trout fishing, hunting, swimming, windsurfing, sailing, water skiing, cross country skiing, ice-fishing, snowmobiling, ranger-led activities, interpretive exhibits, programs.  Visitor Centers.  Amphitheater.  No entrance fee.
    Camping:  10 developed campgrounds.  Boat-in backcountry  campsites available on all lakes.

Channel Islands National Park Ventura, California  
    Along the coast of California, from Santa Barbara to just north of Los Angeles, a unique group of islands offer a diverse variety of plant, animal, and marine life, some found nowhere else in the world.  Sightings of the endangered blue whale, largest mammal on earth; 10,000 year old archeological artifacts; and, stunning fields of wildflowers are among the many adventures you can experience on Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, and San
Miguel islands.        
    Activities:  Hiking, picnicking, wildlife and bird watching, ranger-led activities, fishing, snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, tide pooling, swimming, kayaking and boating.  Visitor Centers on Anacapa, Santa Barbara.  No entrance fee.  Islands accessible by boat.
    Camping: Primitive campgrounds on all islands.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways Van Buren, Missouri  
    In southeast Missouri--through hollows and bluffs, around numerous sinkholes and caves (including bats), fed with ample streams and springs run the cool clear waters of the Current and Jacks Fork rivers.  The park boasts 112 species of fish, 196 species of birds, 58 species of mammals, and 25 species of snakes.  Archeological finds date back 12,000 years.                 Activities:  Canoeing, floating in tubes, swimming, johnboating, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, bird and wild-life watching, car touring.  Visitor Center.  Entrance fee.
    Camping:  Six developed campgrounds and many primitive campgrounds throughout; backcountry camping is permitted.

Cumberland Island National Seashore St. Marys, Georgia
 
    Marsh, mud flats, tidal creeks, beaches, dune fields, and forests make up this 33,000 acre biosphere reserve.  Miles of unspoiled trails offer plenty of opportunities to view sea turtles, alligators, countless shore birds and a variety of flora and fauna.  The Historic District displays 4000 years of colorful coastal history.
    Activities:  Hiking, backpacking, shelling, fishing, picnicking, swimming, bird and wildlife watching, ranger-led activities. Foot travel is the only transportation.  Visitor Center.  Accessed by passenger ferry.  No entrance fee.
    Camping:  One developed,  four primitive campgrounds, and backcountry sites.
